I want to thank my colleague and neighbor from Pennsylvania, Congressman Murphy, for his unrelenting leadership on this legislation and for calling attention to a problem that affects millions of families across the country. Nearly 10 million Americans have serious mental illness, including schizophrenia, substance abuse disorder, and major depression. I think today of the many families in my district who tell me about the heartbreak they have had after losing loved ones to drug addiction or suicide. This legislation will improve the oversight of mental health and substance abuse programs by ensuring we are using the most relevant data and most effective, evidence-based programs to address our mental health crisis. I urge my colleagues to support this legislation, and I thank the gentleman for his leadership.
