“I am very pleased to support Senate Joint Resolution 151, a joint resolution designating this week, April 10-16, 1994, as ``Primary Immune Deficiency Awareness Week.'' Ian Murray of Erie, PA brought the medical problem of primary immune deficiency to my attention some time ago. He and his family have been directly affected, and he has expressed his concern to me that primary immune deficiency, which can express itself in a wide range of disease conditions and levels of severity, is not widely understood in this country. Indeed, many of our young people who may suffer from the deficiency have gone undiagnosed and untreated. This resolution helps to educate the public and bring the matter to greater national awareness. Vicki and Fred Modell, who established the Jeffrey Modell Foundation in memory of their son who died at age 15 of the disease, have worked hard to bring the disease to the attention of parents, families, primary care physicians, and medical specialists in the field. They initially brought primary immune deficiency to the attention of Members of the U.S. Senate, and Senator Lieberman sponsored the resolution. I am pleased to cosponsor it with him. I salute Ian Murray, his family, and the Jeffrey Modell Foundation for their advocacy of this very important issue.”
