today Congress will approve the Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002 Conference Report, which will likely be signed into law by the end of this week. Like families nationwide who have seen investment savings deteriorate and have lost confidence in our markets and business leaders, I have been concerned with revelations about inaccurate corporate accounting and inappropriate and in some cases illegal corporate practices. Recent events have had tragic consequences in my district where employees of Portland General Electric had little control over the company's association with Enron. I support this legislation that will provide funding and regulations that will improve the integrity of the corporate world and help alleviate the anxieties of employees and investors. I trust that this is an incremental step in the process to bring about accurate financial statements and independent relationships among corporate management, auditors, and investment analysts.
