Tom Coburn: “First of all, we just heard some significant misstatements of fact. These companies did not violate the law. In fact…”

On the recordJuly 16, 1998
First of all, we just heard some significant misstatements of fact. These companies did not violate the law. In fact, the law was changed in the midst of them carrying out their right to carry on a business. And the fact that the administration, who changed the law, concurs that this is a fair and proper thing to do, would also counter the argument that this is something that they did not agree with when, in fact, it was carried out. So although I can understand the gentleman's lack of understanding of firearms and understand their feelings on firearms, which I respect totally, we should stay with the facts. These are not bad Americans. They are Americans doing things totally within the limits of the law. And to characterize them as someone other than that is unfair.
