I wish to offer my sincere sympathy to my colleague from Vermont on the loss of his dear friend and very talented and great citizen of our country. I am glad I was on the floor to hear his remarks because I think often, as we debate about abstract issues of policy, as we seek to serve here and make life better for large groups of our citizens, that sometimes in the rush of business we forget how much those individual relationships, personal friendships, family relationships mean to us. We forget that our lives, to be whole and complete, must be involved not only in the service of mankind and womankind collectively, but also in the service and relationship to individuals, one at a time, and especially to those who are closest to us.
