Rob Portman is an American politician and attorney currently serving as the junior United States senator from Ohio, a position he has held since 2011. A member of the Republican Party, Portman previously represented Ohio's 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2005. He also served as the U.S. Trade Representative under President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2006, where he focused on trade policy and international negotiations.
My understanding is President Obama revoked that Executive Order, and I do not understand why.
Don't you think a better accounting of the actual costs would help to actually, again, translate that good language into something that is meaningful?
I think it is only logical that to the extent you have concerns, which I understand, and you mentioned political and legal concerns, I think it is the legal concerns that would constrain you.
I would tell you that if you look at what, again, courts are already, again, applying the arbitrary and capricious standard to very complex, scientific, technical analysis.
I do feel strongly that having that judicial review would have a significant impact on how the agencies went about their work.
this afternoon, after a few days of great anticipation, the President laid out his version for long-term deficit reduction and dealing with our long-term debt. Now that we have heard from him, I am afraid we are left with more questions…
I certainly found that when I was at OMB, an end run around what would normally be the deliberative process and the give and take that you get in a notice and comment rulemaking process.
I believe this PAYGO process would actually force more conversations about alternatives to necessary regulations.
