A member of the Republican Party, Portman previously represented Ohio's 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1993 to 2005. He also served as the U.S. Trade Representative under President George W. Bush from 2005 to 2006, where he focused on trade policy and international negotiations.
