This bill directs the Department of Energy to determine the potential cost savings and threat level reduction by placing spent fuel into a dual-use cask rather than separate storage and transportation casks. By reducing both the handling and exposure periods, we can substantially increase the safety and security levels and prevent a possible or potential future accident at the sites.
