I was asked to lead a delegation for a mission to Iraq and Afghanistan. That delegation included the distinguished gentlewoman from California (Ms. Harman), the ranking member of the committee, and there were four others. There were six of us. We planned a most ambitious schedule for 6 days: six countries, 6 days. Our purpose was not to determine the progress on the Constitution, important though that was; not to check on the morale of the troops, important though that always is; not to check on how we were spending our money on the reconstruction, and that too is very important. Our purpose as members of the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence was to meet with members of the intelligence community on-site in that war zone to hear from them in their own words their assessment of the situation. I want to compliment all of the members of that delegation for the outstanding contribution they made to that mission.
