I rise to speak to the proposed irresponsible cuts to the Legal Services Corporation. The Legal Services Corporation acts as a founding principle of this country--equal justice under law--by supplying legal representation to those who would not otherwise be able to afford it. Those affected by the loss of legal services are the same people the Contract With America has made a career of attacking: seniors, women, children, and low-income Americans. This bill renders the Legal Services Corporation ineffective because it so strictly limits what they can do. It cuts their funding and prohibits their ability to bring class action suits. This is just another way for the Republican majority to systematically disinvest in the poor. Mr. Chairman, we should fully fund the Legal Services Corporation. If we don't make equal justice under the law a reality for all Americans, who will?
