On the recordJuly 10, 1997
the committee noted that this generous increase was to be used toward preparations for the National Wildlife Refuge System's 100th anniversary in the year 2003. Therefore it only seems appropriate to use some of this funding, considering that the Susan B. Anthony House will be a major attraction during the 150th anniversary of the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls next year. Surely if we can prepare for the Wildlife Refuge System's centennial 5 years away, we can provide some small amount of money in commemoration of women's rights. Would we let Mount Vernon or Monticello fall to pieces? Certainly not. Susan B. Anthony was a pioneer for women's rights including the right to vote, to own property, and to participate as equal partners in our democracy and our society. Susan B. Anthony revolutionized the lives of half our Nation's population. Surely she deserves no less than our full support. This amendment does not attempt to provide full support, but merely a token for the restoring renovation. I really would like to ask for a recorded vote on this.
