As we begin today's historic debate, Mr. Chairman, on the Freedom From Religious Persecution Act, I want to commend the gentleman from Virginia (Mr. Wolf) for his outstanding work in drawing attention to the problems of religious persecution around the world, and for introducing this legislation to permanently enlist the United States in the fight against persecution. The tireless efforts of the gentleman from Virginia (Mr. Wolf) on behalf of persecuted religious believers has been an inspiration to all of us and a blessing for followers of all faiths. Mr. Chairman, I also want to commend the gentleman from New Jersey (Mr. Smith), the distinguished chairman of our Subcommittee on International Operations and Human Rights, for his unwavering support of human rights around the world and for his diligent efforts on behalf of this important legislation. Mr. Chairman, let there be no doubt that the results of the passage of H.R. 2431, the Freedom From Religious Persecution Act, is going to be felt around the world. That is what is intended. While reaffirming our Nation's commitment to the vital protection of religious rights, it also sends a long overdue signal to repressive governments that their repulsive behavior is no longer going to be overlooked.
