I think the reason this is so strongly felt by Republicans is the belief that if you raise taxes, the government is going to spend the money anyway or the government is going to waste the money.

This is what it comes down to. And this is why it is so real that there's a path to 270 for Mitt Romney. It's because of that decline in enthusiasm compared to four years ago.
