I would like to talk on the portability issue. I think it is an important one. I know that a lot of people have talked on it. It will not be the last discussion about this. However, I think it is important. I know a little bit about it, and it is really at the heart of this whole bill. Mr. Speaker, basically what it does is to free up somebody to work wherever he or she wants. That is not a bad concept. You work for company A and you want to move to company B, but company B does not have any health insurance program. You get a job at company C, but at a far less salary. You would rather take the job at company B. You cannot do it. You cannot help your family. Under this condition, you must be given an opportunity to have an insurance policy yourself or through the company, irrespective of where you are working or irrespective of the preexisting conditions. It makes a lot of sense, Mr. Speaker. I fully endorse this.

I think we have three issues. First of all, the economy is still in trouble. Secondly, people need unemployment insurance, an extension of that; and, thirdly, we have a hole right in the City of New York and we have got to fill it. Now…

this is a solid, basic bill--with a great purpose. It is to help honor and remember those Americans who used solid, basic values to perform exceptionally and serve great purposes on behalf of our nation. Now veterans are modest people…
