I would argue that that is not a convenient access if you have to ride 2 hours each way on mass transit and walk 6 miles, that is not very convenient.

I continue to hear concerns from my Filipino veteran constituents in Las Vegas, who believe that while the program was well intended, there are still problems with it.

It is important that we get together to discuss the Filipino Veterans Equity Compensation Fund because the Philippines have a long and distinguished history of associating and being part with the United States.

Why don't you just put the appeal form in the original letter when you send it out, and that takes away that 60-day problem in the beginning? That is just commonsense.

I share some of your frustration because most of the veterans in the valley live in Las Vegas, that is where the population is, and yet the regional office is 8 hours away in Reno.

I thought we were supposed to help veterans, so it upsets me when I am given an answer like that.

These are unacceptable statistics and they really address the question of quality of care.

I introduced H.R. 2529. That is a very simple bill that would correct that language problem in the statute.

I would ask you, Mr. Secretary, do you believe that veterans and their spouses should have equal access to federal benefits through the VA regardless of their current state of residency?

I think we all agree that the purpose of these hearings and of your proposed reforms is to increase service to our veterans and to their families.
