Santa Clara generally supports the Valles Caldera legislation but with some serious concerns.

Santa Clara strongly supports section 3, subsection (i), which requires the Secretary to ensure the protection of traditional cultural sites and which grant Santa Clara rights of access to those sites.

It is time to put Valles Caldera fully in the hands of the people.

S. 3452 recognizes that reality and states that hunting and fishing shall be permitted.

Santa Clara strongly supports section 3, subsection (h), the ban on development and motorized access, but asks for an exception to allow Santa Clara members access to parts of Popii Khanu otherwise inaccessible.

In my opinion, the most effective way to address the challenges facing the Valles Caldera National Preserve is to move away from the experimental management framework and toward a more tested public lands management structure.

I believe there is now general agreement that the trust will not be able to meet the law's goal of managing the preserve while achieving financial self-sufficiency.

I believe there is strong public support for National Park Service management of the Valles Caldera, and the inclusion of the preserve in the National Park System will ensure that the area is appropriately protected.

The Park Service has a strong record of managing our Nation's national treasures, and by all accounts, the Valles Caldera meets the high standards for inclusion in the National Park System.

Thank you for doing this hearing. I think the issue of pipeline safety is a very important one.

It is time for us to get to work again on pipeline safety.

It stunned me that the emergency response plan, as I understand it, didn't include plans for the blowout preventer to fail...

I think that also speaks to the importance of the legislation I have introduced, which would give us more research.

I hope that you move forward in that other area as aggressively as you can, because I don't really see much hope that Congress is going to act aggressively on this.

Permanently protecting this unusual landscape as a Preserve in our National Park Service system is the right thing to do.

Congress mandated that the FCC create a National Broadband Plan to address one of the most significant infrastructure challenges of our time.

That is really unacceptable. If you have made the conclusion that this person is not a good leader in one school, what makes you think they are going to be a good leader in another?

I don't think there is any doubt in terms of how we answer that question. It has left Native American students behind.

Tribal education is crucial to sustain the culture and traditions of our Native peoples.

American Indian youth have to endure unacceptable disparities in services and outcomes.

This is the first hearing and the opening hearing to lead us to work on this education issue in a more focused way.
