“the administration proposes to reduce the number of Federal personnel devoted to fighting violent crime. The administration proposes to reduce the number of personnel in the criminal division of the Department of Justice. The administration proposes to reduce the number of Federal criminal prosecutors in the States. The administration proposes to reduce the number of personnel in the FBI and the Drug Enforcement administration. Interestingly enough, the Administration proposes to increase the number of personnel assigned to the antitrust division of the Department of Justice. Now, of course, I have nothing against the antitrust division of the Department of Justice, but when the President of the United States came into this Chamber to deliver the State of the Union Address, he did not say that the American people were fearful of being mugged by a bunch of antitrust violators. He personally referred to violent offenders, and that is where the personnel should be increased, not decreased.”
