I emphasize once again that the Domenici amendment is a killer amendment with regard to the modest deficit reduction proposal that was supported in the Budget Committee. I simply say, once again, that I think the points have been made by others of my colleagues, and I need not repeat those. I simply say that if the Domenici amendment were accepted, it would be a monumental setback for real deficit reduction. There are lots of things wrong that have been advanced on the floor of the Senate today in opposition to the Domenici amendment. The one that I am most concerned about is that it would effectively gut or cut the effectiveness that I think Senator Grassley and I have worked on very hard to craft. I oppose the Domenici amendment, and I hope it will be resoundingly defeated, for a number of good reasons, when it comes to a vote.
