Mr. President, look at what is going on in the Middle East. We have more than 20 countries demonstrating with anti-American protests. Look at countries such as Egypt, Libya, Syria, and Yemen. Look at what is going on in Iraq. Yet at the same time we continue to import our energy from the Middle East. So look at what is going on in the Middle East at the same time we are dependent on them for our energy, when we can produce that energy right here at home and work with our closest friend and ally in the world--Canada--and when we can create American jobs. This is an opportunity. We can produce more energy in this country. We can create jobs. We can get this economy going, and we don't have to be dependent on the Middle East. It just takes the will to move forward with the energy plan we have proposed, but we need an administration that will work with us to advance that energy plan. Gas prices, which affect every working person, every consumer, every family, every business in this country, for the month of September are the highest they have ever been for any month of September. What does that do to American pocketbooks? This is an opportunity. This is an opportunity we need to reach out and grab with both hands. The only question I can ask is: Why aren't we? Why isn't this Senate acting on that right now and why isn't this administration working with us?…
