I have mixed feelings about the comments made by Secretary Gates. I think he is spot-on regarding the commitment of a large number of forces to conflicts in either Asia or the Middle East, but must qualify this statement with the thought that if the conflict is in a vital, national interest, we must never be afraid to take action to protect those interests.
