south Florida is grieving because Nancy Metayer, the beloved vice mayor of Coral Springs, Florida, tragically passed away earlier this month. This was not just the loss of a public official. This was the loss of a daughter, a friend, and a powerful voice for our State. It is the kind of tragedy that stops people in their tracks and leaves an entire community asking how someone so vibrant, so committed, and so full of promise could be taken from us so suddenly. Nancy was a rising star and, more importantly, she was a great person. There were really two types of phone calls I got from Nancy. Whenever I saw her name come up on my phone, I never knew which one I was going to get. The first was a call about somebody who needed help, there was an issue, a family, a problem in the community, something Nancy believed needed attention, action. She was relentless in the best sense of the word. She was never calling about herself, something she needed. She was always calling about help for someone else. She was always their advocate, and Nancy wanted to use her voice for others. That instinct to fight for people showed up in every part of her public life. Nancy was a proud advocate for the Haitian community, and she understood that representation matters. She knew that public service is about making sure every family, every neighborhood, and every voice counts.
