On the recordMarch 5, 1999
It is interesting how their light sort of turned on after such diverse groups as the ACLU and the Christian Coalition came together and opposed these regulations. As my colleague from Pennsylvania pointed out, the regulators have received over 100,000 objections. There are so many objections coming in, that they have a hard time keeping the number up on the web page because so many people are writing in to explain their concerns. I think the American people have caught on to this folly, and I think it is a shame that we have to bring it up in this manner to address it in the Senate. Again, I thank the chairman of the Banking Committee for his fight to protect the Constitution and to protect the privacy rights of American citizens. It is extremely important that we do everything possible to keep from having these rules and regulations passed. They are so invasive.
