Ultimately, the best prospect for achieving a stable Afghanistan will be a peaceful transition to a new government based on a free and fair Presidential election in 2014 that is credible and produces an outcome that is acceptable by the Afghan people.

We need to have not just be talking about democracy; we've got to have a conscious strategy for how to counter what they're doing.
We need to show them that the American political and economic system works; we need to overcome our political gridlock;
We need to shame him for it. And then, hopefully, the Europeans will show in their response that they are willing to stand up to it.
