Ultimately, the best prospect for achieving a stable Afghanistan will be a peaceful transition to a new government based on a free and fair Presidential election in 2014 that is credible and produces an outcome that is acceptable by the Afghan people.

I think the main thing that we have to think about is how to explain to the American people that our safety and security depends on a different--that we can't wall ourselves off from things.
