“Mr. President, I rise to discuss an amendment in behalf of Pluess-Staufer of California--a calcium carbonate company with claim holdings in the Lanfair Valley section of the California desert. The purpose of this amendment is very straightforward--it would extend the Lanfair Valley exclusion to three more sections, sections containing approximately 35 placer claims and 10 millsite claims of the Pluess-Staufer holdings. While this additional exclusion would comprise 1,920 acres, it is very small in comparison to the 8 million acres of new parks and wilderness areas contained in S. 21. Yet these three sections contain the purest of what are very rare deposits of calcium carbonate.”
