Mr. President, I note with great interest the comments of my good friend from Kentucky, Senator Bunning, about the need for coal- to-liquids technology. I agree. I agree wholeheartedly. In fact, as the Senator from Kentucky undoubtedly knows, I have urged this technology. He also knows regrettably the other body is opposed to this technology. We have had some difficulty in finding a way to resolve coal to liquids in both the House and the Senate. I might say to my friend from Kentucky, I am not sure that adding this provision is going to speed the passage of the so-called extenders bill. In fact, I might tease my good friend from Kentucky by saying I think my friend from Kentucky is opposed to passage of the extenders bill. Maybe, if I could ask the Senator, if he would support passage of the extenders bill?

More from Max Baucus
I am part of a team here working for the President and this administration. And I will do everything I can to help implement administration policy.
That is why Senator Baucus and I, along with Chairman Camp of the House Ways and Means Committee, recently introduced the Bipartisan Congressional Trade Priorities Act, which will renew trade negotiating authority.
Our basic is that our national security is No. 1 to us, as their national security is to them, but also our commercial, economic security is so important not just to the United States but also to China and other countries in the world.
I am very concerned about Chinese actions and current trend lines on a range of security issues in the Asia-Pacific region.
