I rise in support of Mr. Kucinich's efforts to secure funding for more study on the allergenic effects of genetically modified foods. I believe that bioengineered foods hold the potential for great benefit to the consumer. However, studies indicate that allergens from one food may pass to another through genetic engineering, and more research is required before families can be comfortable buying them at the grocery store. Americans need to be able to make informed decisions about the food they buy. I understand that funding for an FDA study is not included in the bill we are debating today, but I hope that it can be inserted in conference.
