The language that is in the legislation right now, Mr. Chairman, is current law. It was adopted last year by the House of Representatives. It was passed by the Senate. It was signed by President Clinton. We have no threat of a veto if we keep this current language in the bill. Let me try to frame this issue further by saying what this issue is not about. That is a separate issue entirely. This issue also has nothing to do with making anything illegal. The language that is in the committee bill would not make anything illegal. It would permit private research which is ongoing to continue. Private embryo research is legal now, and it would continue to be legal.”
