I particularly want to highlight sections 7 and 8 of the bill. Those sections reflect an amendment that I authored that was added with the support of the gentleman from Louisiana (Mr. Tauzin), with the support of other Members in the Committee on Commerce. The goal that we had in adopting that particular amendment was, quite frankly, to get these tires off the road just as quickly as possible. I think there was general consensus that today there are still too many recalled tires in use. There are too many waiting lists at dealers in this country. That is an unacceptable situation and presents much too great of a risk to the consumers of America. First, under Section 7, tire manufacturers are absolutely required to print tire ID numbers so that consumers can easily determine if their tire is subject to a recall.
