I wish to also express my support for this legislation, and I commend the gentleman from New Jersey (Mr. Smith) for bringing this before the House. The problem of child labor is truly a global one, as has been pointed out this evening. It impacts children on almost every continent and deprives them of their opportunities for a normal and safe childhood. It is one of the most intolerable forms of human rights abuses. Children have no way of protecting themselves against forced labor and dangerous and exploitative conditions. Recognizing this problem, I am pleased that the President announced earlier this year a child labor initiative. This bill, as has been pointed out, will make the U.S. a leader in the international effort to eliminate child labor, and the children of the world need the United States to play a leadership role on this issue. Mr. Speaker, I urge the adoption of this bill.
