Relevant studies have already been conducted on humans, the results of which are obviously more pertinent to human space flight. Extensive data is also available from previous human space missions, some which have exceeded 400 days. NASA's experiments using rhesus monkeys to study motion sickness, calcium loss and 'sea legs' are not applicable to humans at all. The physiology of monkeys and humans differ drastically. A restrained monkey with electrodes implanted in his legs cannot hope to offer insights into the largely neurological, short-lived and self-correcting problem of 'sea legs.' We already know of methods to limit calcium loss and treat the symptoms of the motion sickness and 'sea legs.' Of course, in this case the monkey is restrained. So any benefits would be minimal. Sending a primate into orbit 30 years ago, 40 years ago, you could claim there would be some justification. But this is 1996. We have had, as I said, 38 to 40 years of humans in space.
