On the recordJuly 16, 1996
In the debate that has gone on and will continue to go on, on this critical issue, the management of the high level nuclear waste, there are myths and there are realities. As the new chairman of the Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, one of my top priorities is to help meet the challenge this nation faces in developing a safe and scientifically sound means of managing spent nuclear fuel. Given the Department of Energy's announcement it will not be able to meet its obligation to begin accepting nuclear waste in 1998, we must address this issue in an aggressive and forthright manner. Judging from the attention paid this matter by Secretary of Energy Hazel O'Leary, I had assumed it was a top priority for you, as well. But recent letters you sent to Senator Richard Bryan and Nevada Governor Robert Miller seem to suggest otherwise.
