“I am very respectful of the Senator from Iowa and the Senator from Utah who have tried to reshape bankruptcy law in this country to be fair and equitable and representative of those who find themselves in desperate straits as a result of debt and the need to reorganize and reshape that and, in some instances, to discharge it altogether. We have said historically that those who willfully, maliciously, or recklessly cause endangerment cannot do that. That has been the standard, and that ought to remain the standard. Today, there is an attempt by the Senator from Michigan to use the bankruptcy code to be politically correct, to be more political than substantive as it relates to the law; that is, to single out an industry and that industry's legal distributors as somehow being separate, special, and unique and, therefore, not being allowed to use the bankruptcy law. It is a great mistake for the Senate to begin to play that kind of game. That is raw politics, and we have not done that in the past.”
