as a cosponsor of the Dayton-Craig amendment, I wish to speak for a few moments about the constructs of the amendment itself and applaud my colleague and partner in this amendment, the Senator from Minnesota, for a very thorough and well-thought-out explanation as to the reason for this amendment. I need not repeat the statistics. I need not repeat the facts that have been so eloquently spoken about a problem that exists in our country today that begs for a remedy and, at the same time, demands that we move forward in the area of expanding trade amongst our trading partners around the world. The elements of fairness, the elements of transparency, the elements of the right hand knowing what the left hand is doing are absolutely critical in any trade relationship. By the character of a developing economy, by the uniqueness of a resource-directed economy, by the uniqueness of a populated economy, all of our countries around the world have differences. And those differences have values. And those countries that sense those values work to protect them or in some way assure that they will not be traded down or effectively destroyed by the very governments that are destined to protect them.

But the only way we pass any of the progressive policies that all of us here support is by winning elections and taking damn majorities.

To every person that supported me, I ask you tonight to support and elect Peggy Flanagan as the next U.S. senator from Minnesota.

I’ve won a district that Donald Trump carried. The job of our Senate candidate is to hold this U.S. Senate seat and to help DFLers up and down the ticket.

Of course, in the primary, people want to point out the few votes I’ve taken against Democrats.
