Rashida Tlaib

Rashida Tlaib is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Michigan's 13th congressional district since January 3, 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, Tlaib is known for her progressive policies and advocacy for social justice. She is one of the first two Muslim women elected to Congress and has been a vocal advocate for issues such as affordable housing, environmental justice, and healthcare reform. Tlaib has also been involved in efforts to address systemic racism and economic inequality.
We also can't claim to support self-determination and democracy and oppose D.C. Statehood.
This represents an extraordinary violation of a democratic principle America claims to represent.
I think it's important to note that D.C. Statehood should not be a partisan issue.
I know that we have to go beyond just diversity in a sense, in the lens of people thinking that just putting our bodies into the room is enough.
I have seen firsthand in my district, which is the third-poorest in the nation, how the lack of diversity among corporate leadership and within the financial services industry primarily has directly impacted and harmed my residents.
Aren't their retirements at a higher risk because we don't require private equity firms to make the same disclosures as publicly traded companies?
Is it true they do not have to share data on whether they are promoting racial equity and diversity?
Is it true that private equity firms don't have to share data on their climate risks?
It is about government taking the role of really trying to reverse decades of discriminatory policy and turn homeownership from a possibility to an actual reality for so many of our communities.
When commercial banks shut out Black and Brown people from lending, they are not just closing a door on homeownership.
I have introduced the Restoring Communities Left Behind Act, and I would ask everybody on the panel to really take a look at it.
