I have been calling for it to be shut down for years. I was the first Member of Congress to call for its shutdown, probably 10 years ago.

Since the disaster at Fukushima, the need to shut down Indian Point, as far as I am concerned, has only grown.

Has the Commission considered whether the D.C. Circuit Court's 2012 decision and the lack of a permanent storage facility will affect the continuation of existing licenses or possibly invalidate them?

Let me say that the safety violations at Indian Point and other nuclear power plants have raised serious questions about nuclear power safety.

Does the Commission plan then to take any further action here such as terminating the use of the facility and reviewing or bringing to a halt the development of the nuclear power in the country?

I joined my committee colleague, Mr. Barrow, for whom I have great respect, and others to express concern about a pending decision that may require a significant number of nuclear facilities to install containment filtered vents.

Mr. Chairman, I thank you for your courtesy and commend you for this hearing.

energy efficiency is one of the simpler ways for us to achieve energy independence and security.

Pollution prevention is always less costly than pollution cleanup.

We do not have to choose between a healthy environment and a healthy economy.

Every citizen in this Nation deserves to live in a community with clean air and clean water.

So when it comes to performance measurement, especially as it will be used to drive new payment systems, don't we have to have a broad participation by physicians, by patients, by hospitals and by the other people in the provider chain?

Well, one of the problems I have is, I get witnesses down there and they just feel they have to make a speech, and all I am really asking for is a yes or no.

Everybody ought to have a say, right?

We need broad participation, don't we?

I commend you and the committee for this hearing. This is something which very much needs to be addressed.

Everybody ought to have a say. The doctors ought to have a say. Their say is going to be very important.

Am I being somewhat unclear? I am just trying to get you to tell me how we set this process up so we get the answers that are best suited to saving us money and full service, seeing to it that everybody participate.

I have always believed that we should build a consensus to create support for moving legislation forward.

Sometimes history and experience have something to teach us.

I want to make it clear that I agree with my colleague, Mr. Whitfield, that we should do something to provide clarity on how to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.

It is my fear that this bill is one of such proposals that is going to cause us a lot of future difficulties.

I am afraid that this bill will take a long established and reasonable effective regulatory process, turn it upside down, to the great detriment to all of those in the industry.

We have to re-appreciate that, that when there wasn't any daylight--any daylight between any of us in the Congress, bicameral, bipartisan, and in the executive branch, that that is a powerful message to people around the world.

The ESA could likely not garner a simple majority vote in today's Congress.
