Now, that certainly highlights the need for school safety planning and training in every single school in America every year.

Students who attend schools with anti-harassment policies that enumerate categories of students for protection report that they feel safer.

I believe strongly in prevention. I certainly know that schools could do so much more to prevent youth suicides than they are currently doing.

When I first entered politics 44 years ago, and 33 years ago in Congress, there was a higher degree of civility.

We would like to thank Chairman Kildee and Chairwoman McCarthy, along with Ranking Members Castle and Platts for convening this important hearing.

We ask that Congress require schools and districts to enact anti-bullying and harassment policies that include enumerated categories.

Crisis prevention and intervention has been my highest priority, along with school safety, for my entire career.

First of all, we would like to thank Chairman Kildee and Chairwoman McCarthy, as well as Ranking Members Castle and Platts for the opportunity to discuss a matter as important as student safety and the prevention of harassment in schools.

I think that we also have, from a safety perspective, it means tighter partnerships between schools, police, mental health agencies and the community partners.

As a father, a grandfather, and a former teacher, I believe there is nothing more important than ensuring the safety of our schoolchildren.

We must better understand the causes of school violence and give our educators the tools they need to protect children from dangerous situations.

I am pleased to welcome all to this hearing on strengthening school safety through the prevention of bullying.

I know that most tragedies that involve young people, they should have been prevented.

But I also think there is a second role where the school can educate people to be civil people.

I think we should give the people of Puerto Rico the right to make their decision.

One thing we don't want is what I call the Carter Glass syndrome--Senator Carter Glass--very famous senator--the Glass-Steagle Bill.

America is a land of diversity within unity, and that is our strength, our diversity within unit.

I feel very strongly on this that Native Americans, including Native Hawaiians, have proven their loyalty through many wars.

I have introduced legislation, H.R. 1578, the Fast Track to College Act, that would support early college, high school, and other dual-enrollment programs.

I can just imagine how devastated I would be if something like this would happen to one of my children.

We all, up here, recognize that your influence on education goes well beyond North Carolina.

They would never have done that 5 years ago, would they, Commissioner?

Madam Chair, when my daughter was in high school, and injury on the job took place in my district.
