There is a wonderful line in a Tennessee Williams play where Blanche DuBois says: I have always depended on the kindness of strangers. It seems to me that is what is happening to the fiscal situation of the United States. We are becoming increasingly dependent on foreigners and in particular foreign countries, since this debt now is being purchased largely by the central banks and not by individual investors. There has been a dramatic shift in terms of who is holding our debt. We are becoming increasingly dependent on others for our fiscal survival. It is a dramatic and deeply concerning development.
