“I feel very fortunate to be a part of that subcommittee, and I thank her for her vigilance and constantly standing up for people who need a voice. Certainly, there is no question about it this evening, Mr. Speaker, that there are a number of people that, just this morning and this evening, as a matter of fact, are crowded on trains trying to get home, many of them having worked all day, glad to be able to sit down and relax as they ride home in an efficient and fast system of which Amtrak has structured itself and made available to them. The interesting thing that we face is that, so often, when we have good things going for us and they are working, sometimes folk like to tinker with them. And when they tinker with them, quite often they lose a lot of their effectiveness, and a lot of times they are thrown off the track. But the fact is that here we have a case where the President basically, by his actions, and I know he says otherwise, puts this very important system, this system that I just spoke about, that so many people take advantage of, and certainly those in my district do, is about to take it and put it in a situation which would make it almost impossible to operate.”
