On the recordFebruary 4, 1998
When I was a student at Howard University here in Washington, Ron Dellums was one of my heroes. We were at Howard protesting all kinds of things, and a lot of us saw government as not something we wanted to get into. We felt that it would be very difficult to go into government and not have to sacrifice our feelings, our concerns and our convictions. Ron Dellums was someone who was a hero for us. When we saw this man come into the Congress, a man who stood tall, who refused to bow to anything that was not consistent with his conscience, it made us feel good.
