as the lead sponsor of this bill, H.R. 1784, the Women's Health Office Act of 2002, I must say I am delighted to be here today. I am here today with this bill with great thanks to the subcommittee chairman, the gentleman from Florida (Mr. Bilirakis), and the gentleman from Ohio (Mr. Brown), the ranking member. Also, I would like to thank the chairman of the committee, the gentleman from Louisiana (Mr. Tauzin), and the ranking member, the gentleman from Michigan (Mr. Dingell). But it is true what the gentleman from Florida has said: I have bugged him indefatigably, and I very much appreciate this important piece of legislation coming before us. I also want to thank the 96 cosponsors and the gentlewoman from New York (Mrs. Maloney) for joining with me on this legislation. I also wanted to thank all of the hard-working organizations, the nonprofits and individuals, for their unity in working together to advance women's health and to help to bring this bill to the House floor for a vote. Mr. Speaker, the Women's Health Office Act of 2002 will provide for permanent authorization for offices of women's health in four Federal agencies: the Department of Health and Human Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Food and Drug Administration.
