I will say we will always know what we did here by virtue of reauthorizing this Violence Against Women Act. Indeed, the gentleman from Illinois (Chairman Hyde) has really been the leader of a number of champions and a champion himself to enable Congress to continue the commitment that we made in 1994 to eradicate domestic violence in our society. For millions of women, reauthorizing VAWA means maintaining the link to life without fear or pain, a right that everyone deserves and a right that we have a duty to protect. Maybe we can only imagine what life would be like to be terrified of the one we love, to fear how our children will be affected by violence, to see what they see and feel in their own homes. Every year in this country, over 3 million children watch as their mother is beaten.
