I urge this body to vote in support of the Boehlert-Markey amendment. We heard that earlier this week the National Academy of Sciences issued their long-awaited report which concluded that technologies currently exist which can help our Nation substantially increase fuel economy. This amendment simply moves this conclusion forward. By raising the average fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks, we will save more oil than the most generous estimates suggest that ANWR would provide. The NAS report also concludes that these improvements are both safe and economically affordable. The Boehlert-Markey amendment allows our Nation the opportunity to be a world leader in the development and advancement of new technologies to improve our environment. Vote ``yes.''
