“I rise, as my colleagues have, to recognize the upcoming anniversary of the dynamic 4-H Youth Development Program. I congratulate the gentleman from Florida (Mr. Foley) for introducing H. Res. 112. For a century the 4-H club has offered a wide range of projects and activities for the purpose of building the leaders of tomorrow. I am fortunate enough to represent the congressional district with not only local branches of the 4-H club, but also the headquarters of the 4-H Youth Development Program at the National Conference Center in Chevy Chase, Maryland. In my district, Montgomery County, the 4-H club reaches over 8,000 youth annually with such innovative programs as Adventures in Science. During the early 1970s, Ralph R. Nash began this hands-on science education activity in his basement in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in order to provide science adventures for his daughter.
