Miami was also the city where one of the most shameful episodes in our history transpired, where in 1993, the St. Louis, filled with Jewish refugees trying to flee the horrors of Nazi Germany waited for days, seeing the lights of the city ashore, seeking shelter and refuge. Shamefully, we turned the St. Louis away and condemned many of its passengers to death in the Holocaust. We say never again. Yet fear and uncertainty was palatable this weekend in Miami and across the country.…”
