I wish to speak in strong support of Sylvia Mathews Burwell, who has been nominated to serve as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, HHS. HHS is a $1 trillion agency responsible for, among other things, managing Medicare, Medicaid, and implementation of the Affordable Care Act, ACA. HHS needs a strong leader. I believe Sylvia Burwell is up to the job. President Obama could not have selected a better person to lead HHS into future. I first got to know Sylvia during the Clinton administration, but I also worked with her when she was at Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Walmart Foundation. I really got to know Sylvia more recently as she ran the Office of Management and Budget, OMB. She played a pivotal role in helping Congress come to agreement on a budget deal last December. Her work at OMB has prepared her to step up to challenge of leading HHS. She is a problem solver who knows how to work with Congress. She is also a mom with kids. I am confident that Sylvia will be an outstanding HHS Secretary. It is my hope that she is confirmed quickly. It is important that HHS has a leader in place. It is important that Congress has a point person in place as we work to pass the fiscal year 2015 Labor-HHS appropriations bill. And it is important for the country to have a Secretary of HHS confirmed so we can move forward with implementation of healthcare reform.
