“For months, the President has engaged in a callous witch hunt against Federal workers, many of whom are Marylanders. Now this administration has begun attacking the very unions that represent the civil servants. The President's latest Executive order guts the ability of Federal workers across the government to collectively bargain. And it is just the latest attempt by this administration to skirt the law, strip protections for workers, and drastically cut the Federal workforce that keeps Americans safe and healthy. I predicted that this would happen when the Secretary of Labor and her Deputy came before the HELP Committee. I was asking pointedly whether they would honor legally binding Federal collective bargaining agreements, and both said they had to check with some people and could not say. This administration clearly does not have even a basic understanding of the legally binding nature of collective bargaining agreements. And at their core, like so many others in this administration, they simply do not respect the law. That is why we cannot let this stand. My amendment would prevent the President from improperly using the national security exemption as a means to carve away workforce protections for Federal workers.
