Congress created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) after the financial crisis so there would be a government agency that had the tools and the authority to protect consumers from being cheated on their mortgages, credit cards, checking accounts, student loans, and other financial products, and to hold financial institutions and other companies accountable.
