Lafayette himself, when tempted by offer of release on certain conditions or promises, was stern as his jailer, and refused inexorably,--choosing to suffer, sooner than compromise in any respect his rights and duties as Frenchman or as American citizen, which latter title he always claimed.
This quote illustrates Lafayette's steadfastness in refusing to compromise his principles, even under pressure.
