William Jefferson
The Public Record
A jury has convicted former Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson of taking bribes in a case where $90,000 was found in his freezer.
This may ring a bell. In June of 2007, federal agents filed charges after finding some $90,000 in his freezer. Jefferson says he is innocent.
The investigation of $90,000 the FBI says it found in his freezer is racist.
All of the allegations are misleading, and all of the allegations are untrue.
My family and I have determined that I will not sacrifice my honor or cave to political pressure and that we will sell every stick of furniture in our home and everything else we own or that we may possess to clear our name and to see that…
I am absolutely innocent of the charges that have been leveled against me. And we're going to fight -- I'm going to fight my heart out to clear my name.
Did I make a mistake in judgment along the way? Yes, I did. That I deeply regret. But did I sell my office or conduct official acts for money? Absolutely not.
I will take full responsibility for any crimes that I committed if that were the case, but I will not plead guilty to something I did not do, no matter how things are made to look and no matter the risk.
